To tell the browser that you want to use the http protocol.

Other protocols include https (http secure), ftp (file transfer), rtsp (real time streaming), and many more.

Most browsers by default assume http if you don't type any.

http refers Hyper text transfer protocol which is used to transfer webpages,sounds,videos between two any hosts 9i.e) server and client and so on most of all browsers may use this protocol so no need to put before the web address it is defaultly taken by browser's.This http protocol work's under transmission control protocol (tcp) suite(master of managing protocols).

to tell the browser you are trying to view a web page usint hyper text transfer protocol

many browsers now do not require you do this however
