They are leftists. Successful, capitalist America is the hated enemy of leftist nations, so they are working to demoralize America from within.
It's not a question of courage, it's about treason. They must tear away at America's resolve in order to eliminate America as a super power, thus giving dominance to the globally cooperating Socialist/Communist nations who wish to re-enslave the masses.

They are not scared and they don't want to reason with them. They are using Islamo-Fascist nuts to do their dirty work, to bring down the evil imperialist capitalist democracies of the West. They are allies at the moment. The USSR is dead but the ghost of the Comintern remains viable, and is entrenched.
Let's not forget who set up the training camps for Hitler's armies ... (in exchange for sharing Poland, of course...)
