Three answers to this one:
(a) because they can get away with it.
(b) because they've got a lot of anger about a variety of issues that they may not feel free to express in other places, and
(c) because of the other idiots on the road who cut them off, fail to give way when they should, change lanes without looking, turn right from the left hand lane and vice versa, tailgate, rear end their cars, or worse, their motorcycles, go through red lights, etc, etc. (I hope you don't do any of these things.)
Apparently most people believe that their own driving skills are above average.

I think driving is a very culture-dependent thing.

Coming from Europe, I was amazed by the experience of driving in Florida - in particular the fact that no-one would pause to let someone else out of a side street into the traffic flow, even if the traffic was slow-moving and they were going nowhere fast.

Where I come from this is an accepted courtesy of the road, but folks there seemed not to see it that way.

Then there are other places like Greece or Southern Italy where so many people drive like complete nutcases - again, it's a cultural style.

My basic point is that people don't really tend to question cultural styles when it comes to driving. Because instinctively no-one feels like getting too experimental in a car, they feel safer doing what they've always done, and what they've learned from the people around them. So a culture of rude driving will tend to survive a lot longer than a culture of rude shopping might.

When we are young, we view a vehicle as an age of passage, a freedom and independence they never knew before, a private space. Then comes traffic and mayhem, all the other drivers feel as you do, frustrated and in a rush. Society is competitive, some of the nicest people I have ever met in person were devils behind the wheel. Your comment about men drivers is not warranted, there are millions of women in SUVs tailgating, wasting fuel, most are alone, to feel powerful and like pushing men in smaller cars down the road, I have over 2 million miles of driving and seen about all. how about you? If I hit every woman that cut me off, there be many less driving perhaps now, people are over aggressive in vehicles and like their guns, Americans won't change. Try driving in the Philippines or Vietnam, you think it's bad here..

I drive a lot and what I see is that many people will drive slow in the fast lane. Why? In the US people can not drive. The sign says slower traffic stay to the right. Usually it is a Chinese guy or a Mexican going at their own pace clueless of their surroundings. Move the *&%^ over. Housewife in SUV talking on the cell phone, move the @&%$ over. Why must I wait for or have patience for bad drivers? Not being rude but get the heck over to the slow lane. I see it every day. Usually it is either a woman (sorry) or a Mexican (always slow) an Asian (who cant drive period) or an Elderly person. I am sorry for stereo typing but you can almost bet on it. I am not better than them but why must I have to wait for them to realize they can't or will not get out of the way just to do the speed limit? Who is rude. Atlanta great drivers! California, crappy drivers.

The answer to this question is the same for why people get rude in any situation. I mean why do women get rude when they see other girls wearing bad hair or cloths? For every answer you receive, think about what makes you get rude, and this is what motivates men or women. Being rude, I assume, is a response mechanism when someone feels offended, is disrespected, or sees someone doing something stupid or annoying. I bet if you introspectively analyze rudeness, you will ultimately determine why "men" may be prone to be rude while driving.

Hope this helps : )

This is my favorite question to answer yet! Alright, I heard in some road rage study that around 60% of drivers on the road are in an angry mood or an irritable state of mind.
This expert on road rage had stated that people often tend to think that they're as large and indestructible as their vehicles are, and that makes sense because people do some incredibly risky and reckless things on the roadways.
As far as MEN go, I personally believe that they try to dictate the roadway in order to distinguish which alpha male domineers.

I don't know why but men tend to be unable to control their behavior on the road sometimes....once they are angry at a driver in front of them, they do crazy things like tail-gating (road rage). I can't answer why since I'm not a man..but women are actually safer drivers--that's why auto insurance is generally cheaper for us--we get into less accidents compared to men.

Have you ever watched a bunch of hogs while they eat and go after the best place in the mud? They will push, ram, and grunt
at each other like the animals that they are. And the male hogs
are the worst. What else can you expect from a bunch of ego
driven road hogs?

sometimes its the neighborhood. My personal experience of 20 years of driving has been good. As for those aggrssive "men" drivers they usually get the attention of someone less tolerable, are reported, and are prompted to follow the rules of the road. If they don't, they stand to lose cash, their license, their freedom and on rare occassions, their life. I'm glad there are more people like you, than there is of them.

good question. I think it is because people are "separated" from other drivers and don't have that human connection. Do you know what I mean. So it is easy to be mean. when you are not face to face with someone. Maybe too it's your driving, have you thought of that?
I can be very rude when Driving, if someone makes me mad. I don't know why I am always nice otherwise... hmmmmmm .. I think someone should do their masters thesis on this. good luck..
