If you have a REAL good filter and take good care of the tank you can have most non-aggressive species of fish with goldfish - at least ones that the goldfish cant eat.
The problem is goldfish give off a slime and are very dirty nasty fish. They end up peeing the heck up out of the water and will raise ammonia to high levels quickly. Fish like betas have a hard time living with goldfish becuase of the nasty body slime they give off.
Why not find a home for the goldfish and get some tetras instead?

Goldfish are a hard fish to find tankmates for because they need cooler water. White cloud minnows are coldwater but a full grown goldfish can eat them. Please do not add tropical fish, because if you have your tank at coldwater temps, the tropical fish will suffer, and if the temp is at tropical temps the goldfish will suffer.

you should not mix tropicals with goldfish, they have different temperature requirements and the goldfish give off ammonia constantly (not good for the other fish)
just add other varieties of goldfish - there are many to choose from and all sorts of colors

here in Australia, some pet shops keep "danios" (e.g. zebra danios, albino danios) or a SINGLE siamese fighting fish (beta) in with their goldfish.
sucking catfish and weather loaches can be helpful tank cleaners as well, as long as the catfish don't get too big.
these seem to be quite compatible in a non heated tank. i wouldn't keep them in a pond outside though, far too cold in winter.
koi carp are nice, but their ADHD like behaviour means they often annoy the calmer goldfish.

It requires more work (as goldfish are 'dirty fish'), but I always kept a Mollie and guppies with my goldfish. They got along great and until the Mollie passed away recently, the Mollie and goldfish were inseparable. Little African frogs also were a fun addition.
