I would recommend doing all of the above.
But also bear in mind, when you sign website guestbooks etc, These pages are utilised by spammers, hence why you ma receive mails from companies that are of no relevance.
If you want to leave an Email address on a public page, then DO NOT type "@" instead write ur address as (Elvis at yahoo,co,uk)

There is always a link at the bottom of these pages asking them to Unsubscribe even though you probably didn't subscribe in the first place. Personally I just hit the Spam button on my mail page and this normally stops any other emails from these companies. I also used to be pestered with these type of emails.

I had the same problem, but I didn't get marketing mail. I got people pretending to be the server, telling me that worm e-mails are being sent from my computer. They told me to download this specific file on my computer to destroy the virus. Everyone of those files the send me, contained a virus. When you replied to the sender it says there's no such address! I just pushed the Spam button and since then I haven't gotten any more of them.

change your email account! never ever sign up for anything on the Internet and only give the address to your friends! Or keep 2 addresses! 1 for friends and family and the 2 for sign ups

Be careful of the "unsubscribe" button. In a lot of cases if you click it you are just confirming that your e mail address is active.
It's a bit laborious but you can highlight each message then click "message rules" and "block sender". Alternatively just get a new e mail address and give it to freinds only and abandon your old address.

Look for an unsubscribe link or to cancel subscription instructions, more likely at the bottom of the page. If there are none, mark as spam or block addresses.
