hi..
i feel this can help you out. turn ur notebook off and press the power button while booting keep tapping F2 key( not sure for HP) and you enter to the Bios.just see if the red line appears here also. if it appears over here then there is a hard failure,if not then a software trouble.

For a software problem:
Boot your computer in safe mode and go to the device manager by RIGHT CLICK( My Computer) ---> Properties-----> Advanced Tab----> Device manager and look for the display adapters. if there are any "!" mark in an Yellow triangle, it means the drivers have gone old, so u need to update it. if there is a red cross the drivers are disabled . so if u have two drivers then try disabling one giving a right click and disable. and restart ur notebook. look whether it appears.....

For hardware problem:
1. Try reseating the display cable. for this remove the keyboard by unscrewing screws below the monitor. and after u remove the keyboard u will find a black cable plugged into the adapter. juz slide it out and plug it again. and fix the kybrd as well. if it still occurs try it with the external monitor if it occurs in the external monitor as well then it sis the motherboard or the Graphic Card has gone bad if not then it is the LCD . also look whether there are any loose hinges on the sides of the lcd.

Hope this will fix it. all luck to you..........

Your screen could be going out. You need to provide a better description of the red lines.

connect to an external monitor and check is the display same there if yes then uninstall and reinstallation of display drivers will fix the issue.

If the external display is good then it is an issue LCD of notebook
