Why not go alto? get used to the experience and then I'd say go to a bari. If you're new to music etc alto is nice because you can "honk" and still make a noise (my music teachers would shudder at that:)) and then you're still learning the fundamentals of reading notes, beats etc. But over time on any sax it's about tone and breath control..but I personally think you can work both on the alto and then move up and down to saxes.... Play it like Parker!

There is a HUGE difference between the two! The best starter would be a Alto, next the Tenor, then the Baritone. The baritone is HUGE and probablly the most difficult of the saxes to play. Might want to try the alto first to get the hang of things and to see if you like it. The bigger the sax the more expensive they get too. Good Luck!

well in my band (at my school) the director won't let beginners even look at a bari. sax (exaggeration) until they have at least two years of experience, before that they have to play on the soprano sax, then in two years some of them will move onto either the alto sax or the bari. sax. So basically if your just starting out, i'd go with the soprano: it's essentially what people think of when they think of saxaphones, i'd get some experience on that first, maybe rent it, then if you want to go lower switch to the bari.

However i might add that the bari. sax doesn't get much melody in a band, it's like the tuba, only woodwind...

though i play the trombone so i wouldn't really know pros and cons playing wise, hope i could help though

Baritone is much bigger and heavier than a soprano. It requires more energy to play it. It also depends on where you want to play eventually, and what sound you prefer. They're very different sounds.
