Is the Star Trek franchise Dead?

It is definitely not dead. There are toomany fans ready to give the franchise their money. Since Enterprise is over and the next Generation'S movie are
apparently finished, Rick Berman and company must be doing alot of brainstorming. It is a bit unnerving that the studios that Star Trek endeavors use have been quiet for so long. I hreard a rumor that a movie will be next about a ship and or time not explored yet. I would like it to be a story with my favorite voyager characters but oh well.

Difficult question. I think over here in the UK, yes it probably is (it really is regarded with derision over here, and now Doctor Who is popular again Trek will lose the loyalty of youngsters who would grow into the Trekkies of tomorrow). However Trek is still popular in the good old USA and is really accepted as a part of Americana and American pop culture. Because of this I think it is unlikely to die out completely. A lot will hinge on the popularity of the next Trek film - Trek XI in 2008. It looks like it's going to be a prequel with Kirk and Spock (young actors, obviously - Matt Damon has expressed an interest in playing Kirk)- there will probably be an attempt to make it 'cooler' and 'hard edged' in the way that Batman, Battlestar Galactica and James Bond have been re-visualised. Whether this will mean more violence and action and less of what made Trek special (optimistic Roddenberryesque ideals) we shall see. It will no doubt be a reboot, though. I think Trek XI is Trek's last chance - if it fails Trek will not be on TV for a long time, if ever. I think TV movies or straight to video (DVD) could be an option (to cater for hardcore Trekkies like me). The highpoint of the NextGen days are long gone, though, whatever happens. Sadly we are unlikely to see any more series set in the time of TNG, DS9 and VOY, which is a shame for those of us who enjoyed those eras and were disappointed with Enterprise.

Pretty much... if the new movie doesn't impress a lot of people, it can end right there.

Problem is they are stuck in their formula of doing things, and it's gotten old. They need to get writers that haven't worked with Trek before to try and change up the approach a bit. I thought Enterprise was on the right track during the first 2 seasons in doing this- actually having ongoing continuity and arcs, letting the cast have personalities and giving them opportunities to act, etc.

But they decided they wanted to restablish continuity with the other series and it became typical Trek again.

Just like Casino Royale proved... you can put a new spin on a long established fanchise, new look, recast, and still turn out a great movie. Yes, there will be die hard fans not wanting to give it a shot because its different (just like the new Galactica) but there will be a lot more old and new fans that will get behind a quality movie.

Star Trek will never die. I just think that technology and our knowledge of science has advanced so far that Star Trek no longer seems to inspire us. I think that Star Trek needs to come up with more innovative ideas because the whole interest in Star Trek is what the future will be like. The difference in technology in the 60's and the original series was much greater than recent Star Trek series and now. Nowadays it is almost like watching current events projects that are in R&D.

The next movie is due out in 2008 or perhaps 2009. I don't think we'll see a new series unless the next movie does really well. TNG was the best, DS9 was good, Voyager was okay and Enterprise was boring. Each series after TNG was less popular that its predecessor and the last couple of movies didn't do well at the box office. ST needs a break and some new creative direction.

Remember Spock quotation, "Live long and Prosper!" Obviously, Star Trek have live a long life and prospered the owner! (Paramount studio). They don't want to lose money over money making franchise, so they better keep Star Trek alive or we will set our phaser on 'overkill'.

sort of... they don't actually know where the rights are, its passed through the hands of too many writers and people. unless a terminator style resurrection happens(terminator franchise was in a similar situation until someone at the studio saw the rights being sold at a fire sale due to liquidation or something)theres a side problem of having few NEW fans, theres plenty of old ones, but new people to it isn't a huge enough amount for them to go actively digging for it, but pretty much everyone who worked on the tv show is fighting to get it back on the silver screen.

No, but it needs a break. Five series and 11 movies has taken it's toll on some fans apparently since Enterprise did not last long like the previous three shows. Hopefully the next movie will be good if they get a decent cast.
