Other than suffering from liver disease due to excessive alchohol consumption, is there anything else about this man that would explain his "witch-hunt" compaign against communism in the 1950's. I understand that those were different times, tv was new, etc. Was the man crazy or just overzealous?

According to the Venona files, he was not so crazy. I'm not condoning his methods, but it's a fact that Soviet spies really had penetrated the highest levels of the US government. The KGB documents that have been released since the collapse of the USSR have further corroborated the Venona source. If McCarthy is to be faulted for anything, it's for not bringing a more professional attitude (don't be a drunk!) to his spy-hunting.

He suffered from depression, but just remember that just because people thought he was crazy, doesn't mean what he said wasn't true.
