Look at the dividing line between the Mountain Time Zone and the Pacific Time Zone between Oregon and Idaho. What's up with the strange hook into Oregon?

The reason why the Mountain time zone hooks west into Oregon is because the people in that corner of Oregon have to do most of their business and commerce with Boise Idaho, which is on Mountain time.

When the time zone boundaries were established, the people setting them decided what radius from the center of Boise would include the most people likely to do business in there, instead of having economic links further west in Portland and Salem.

The boundary was adjusted accordingly to put them all in the Mountain time zone so they would not be incoveinienced by having to adjust their watches all the time.

Economically, Eastern Oregon (Malheur County) maintains close communication with Idaho, which is mostly in the Mountain Time Zone. thus, Eastern Oregon is in Mountain Time while the remainder is in Pacific Time.
