firstly, i would prefer a laptop with os loaded & recovery disk included

piracy is rampant in india, granted
but for a desktop, it's manage'able

for a laptop, it becomes a problem at airports
a surprise check could land you in a soup with pirated os

pre-loaded os ensures that the windows xp sticker, with notebook manufacturer is pasted on under-belly of notebook
this is enuf, they won't even bother booting up u'r notebook to check !

>> besides u need an os anyway, unless u plan on linux or something, which i doubt !

buying win xp-home seperately could cost you 4 k & you may not have all system components & drivers properly installed

>> my suggestion > get one with win xp loaded !

meaning hp v/s toshiba,
widesreen is a big advantage especially when working on spread-sheets / excel files

42 k is a good enuf price for the dv1743 !

The Pavilions have and always will suck, get an HP Compaq, I think they call them Probooks now. HP Compaq is the business line of computers (not to be confused with Compaq Presarios).

go for the Toshiba that is your best bet... and you don't need windows xp.... you can download Novell Suse Linux 10.2 (Windows) for free, you get all the software you will ever need, or you can buy it from Novel online.. check it out save yourself some money

to buy it go to www.novell.com
to download it goto www.opensuse.org
and you can make money by selling it in your country

there is also a live DVD version that you can run from the DVD without installing it on your computer you can run all the programs from the dvd and you can also surf the internet with it

hope this helps you out

I would recommend DELL. However, from your list I would suggest either the HP or the Toshiba machine due to quality and reliability.
