who is bothered about democracy to be established there? if that is the case the troops would have been dispatched to Myanmar and Nepal.and Pakistan. it is oil that is important for the war in Iraq.

We are fighting to protect the saudi royal family from any competition in the middle east and to defend Israel which has been a project in the making for a few centuries. End of story. Period.
As for region of Iraq being the oldest civilization known to mankind, yeah, that is pretty interesting...but the government has been rotating like a revolving door for the past few centuries. It's just business.
Another person on this thread asked why Saddam decided to invade Kuwait: the answer is because we said it was ok for him to do so when Iraq told us they were going to do it *documented fact* (my guess is that Saddam was planning on heading directly into Saudi Arabia after Kuwait and taking over the entire middle east and he figured we were comfortable with that and that we would work with him and become future partners).
I don't know why I got thumbs down, I'm just stating the facts as they are. I guess ignorance is bliss.

Boomer you are correct and I have to say well stated.
I have friends that are Iraqi Shiites. They are very glad that we got rid of Saddam. They want Democracy and a chance to speak on their own behalf and have a voice in their own Government. Look at the millions that showed up to vote in the elections even tho they were risking death to do it. Most Americans wouldn't risk getting a cold to vote.
If the fools believe that we are in Iraq for oil had enough intelligence to do some research they would note that it would have been easier Militarily to take Iran's. No one would have griped except maybe Russia

What ignorant person thinks that Iraq existed as the same form of civilization for thousands of years? It hasn't even been called Iraq for two hundred years.
Saddam's Socialist Dictatorship that brutalized its subjects was only around for a few decades.
As to why... Saddam started a war of conquest to take over neighboring nations' oil fields. His greed for oil inspired him to send his tanks into Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. (The first US troops captured by Saddam's forces were taken in Khafji, Saudi Arabia) Aren't you upset that he did not respect other nations' sovereignty? We finished the war after calling off a cease-fire that he repeatedly violated.
As the victor, we are responsible under Geneva Conventions to ensure the construction of its new government and to provide military defense until Iraq can handle that on its own.

They were not a nation at all. The modern Iraq you refer to is a creation of the League of Nations (just as useless, it appears, as the United Nations, but less corrupt). It was an artificially drawn up map for a disorganized territory that resulted from the death of the Ottoman Empire.
If you do not believe that others should have individual rights, a chance to improve their lives and the lives of their families; a voice in their government, then you do not deserve it yourself.
Surrendering the US and a majority of sensible, hard working, honest Iraqis to a bunch of warlords and their totalitarian allies is extremely unwise.
You should talk to real Iraqis, returning GI's, and investigate who's been indoctrinating you all this time.

It goes along with the philosophy that we take the war elsewhere so it's not fought here.
It's been that way since the white house was burned down about two hundred years ago.
