I believe he bought the option to MS version of DOS. There where servral out there at the time.

Gates started with Basic as a operating system and moved later to the DOS operating system.

Some would say that Microsoft (tho not necessarily Bill Gates) stole Windows from MAC. See the history of Windows:

Bill bought a version of DOS from someone... he modified it n sold to IBM... for more interesting facts bout these and windows and mac problems, i would recommend to watch a movie: Pirates of Silicon valley, it's really a great movie... quite interesting n revealing wat all blunders were there in microsoft and apple.

That means they own it.
