i can get as far as the rooms but applet wont open room for me

Yes, you need Java in order for the applet to load, since the applet is a "Java Applet".
You can go to this link, http://java.com/en/ and download Java free of charge. If you have Java, and the applet still won't load, clear out your temporary files, and try getting into the game again. I had it happen to me, and when I got rid of the temp files, the applet loaded fine.

I think you most probally need java for yahoo pool.

No i don't think so you mostly need it for games online not like yahoo but runescape and things like that.
