Before Green Lantern… before Batman… there was The Phantom!

“I swear to devote my life to the destruction of piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice, and my sons and their sons shall follow me!” (The oath of the Skull, 1936.)

The Phantom himself is one of my favorite characters in that respect. There is something that is just so noble about him. Every other super hero that has taken a solemn vow to fight crime and evil follows in this tradition. And the wife of the Phantom of each generation gives up her life and willingly follows him into the jungle and never returns, to support this goal. They do it not for themselves, not for revenge, but for the welfare of the entire world.

I loved that he was the first "generational" hero. Where someone would take over the mantle and suit and continue the legacy of the Phantom. Other comics characters would not reinvent themselves until the Silver Age in the 50's and 60's, but the Phantom already had this idea back in the 1940's.

It makes him both mortal and immortal.

Phantom - makes a few words go a long way.
I think the likes of someone such as Charles Bronson or Clint Eastwood in his heyday would have done the mask proud!
