I first went when I was 15 because I was having pains in my ovaries. It's a little uncomfortable, and kind of embarrassing, but not horrible. It's nothing to be worried about. The gynecologist sees people's bits every day.
I went with my mum, but made her stay outside during the exam (even though I wasn't sexually active, I was still embarrassed.)
If you aren't sexually active, then they insert a finger and press against your tummy to feel for things. If you are sexually active, then they'll insert a speculum (it's smaller than most guys' penises), so they can have a look inside with a light, and take a swab from your cervix to check for stds and cancer.
The gynecologst NEEDS to know if you are sexually active - otherwise they can't help you properly. If you don't want your mum to find out whether you are or not, you can make her to stay outside while you talk to the gyno.

18 because that the age you should start seeing a gyno regardless of if you're sexually active or not. I'd been lecturing my sister for years to go (she's 21 now) and she's refused. Last month she got a cyst on her ovaries that could've been fixed a lot sooner had she actually be going to the gyno.
Cervical cancer is starting to hit women earlier and earlier. It is uncomfortable (not painful) for about 5 minutes. Cancer is not fun. Why risk it?

I started going when I was also 17. I went because I had become sexually active and needed to see if I was pregnant. The exam can be uncomfortable but the doctor will talk you through it. I was very nervous when I first started to go, but you will get used to it. Good luck.

I went for the first time when I was 17 because I am very irregular with my period. It is somewhat uncomfortable but doctors are aware that it is something difficult for all women so most often they start talking about other things so you can forget about what they are doing to you and they are finished before you know it.

I had to see my gyn at the tender age of 10 years old. I had exploratory surgery so they could look at my ovaries a week later. I was of course taken by my mother; she came in with me. Which at that age i found comforting. As u continue to age and go threw childbirth and all that ; u will find this will become much easier.

I'm 19 and am due for my first visit in a month. Mainly going because I'm sexually active and have ovarian cysts AND am on birth control. Lots of reasons! And plus its just a good thing to see a gyno once you turn 18 to check for HPV and other problems... Good luck hun!

I was 19 the first time I went. I went because of an infection and my hormonal imbalance.
My mother took me, but my dad drove. The doctor was a woman.
It went well. It didn't hurt or anything.

I'm right there with you! I'm 19, and my first visit is soon because of extreme irregularity. I have had friends who went when they were as young as 14. They told me it is uncomfortable (especially if you're a virgin). I'm going with my mom. You should go with whoever you feel most comfortable with.
