The only way to really increase your typing speed would be to type a lot. Practice is the best way to increase your speed. Other than that, try installing a typing program on your computer. There's a lot of typing intructor programs out there, and most of them are pretty helpful.

Practice only makes perfect if you practice properly. Have you taken a typing class before? There are several key things to know in order to type fast:
1) Technique - keep your fingers curled and wrist off the desk. I have seen people who have been using computers for decades who still finger-peck. It's so painful to watch them. Definitely there is a correct and a wrong way of typing. Every finger has designated keys to use.
2) Memorization - remember where all the keys are without looking at the keyboard. If you have to think about typing words or always have to look at the keyboard, this will limit your speeds.
3) Practice - using a typing program. It teaches you to be efficient with all letters, then works on common words.
I type around 80 words a minute. About 15 years ago, I typed around 30 words a minute. After taking 3 typing classes and use the computer every day, I was able to increase my typing speed in no time.
I can type as fast as I speak or think. Try to dictate yourself.

keep writing this line "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" in any word processing software (even notepad is also ok). u should pay attention on the screen of course instead of the keyboard and type letter with the comfortable finger. Try to make a picture of the keyboard in u'r mind but dont look at keyboard at all. It will slow u down forever.
try this for a few weeks and I'm sure u'll amaze urself.
Dont use typing softwares. They're... not applicable always.
And never try to look at the keyboard while typing, coz then u may type fast someday, but u'll look like kids and will never be able to type by looking at screen (the greatest and smartest way of typing). I never took any typing class or software to learn typing but I learned it within 2 months before one n half year and now I can type even without looking at screen or keyboard, just need to concentrate what I'm typing, which letter I'm gonna use. It takes time to be perfect though, but not that much. B confident.
Good luck...

There is no shortcut to increase your typing speed. Practice is must but that too in a systematic way. From any typing coaching institute you can take lessons they show you which finger is to be used for pressing a particular key.
Practice these lessons one by one (One lesson for atleast 2-3 days). Then once you finished your lessons and you know the positions of your fingers then you can simply practice type to increase your typing speed.
For type practicing there are various PC games also on internet. You can also use them later when you once know the finger positions on keyboad.
Good luck

I started as a hunt and peck method. Then I got a job where using a computer and typing was pretty much an all day thing. That greeatly increasred my typing speed plus improving finger dexterity. So just practice practice practice. You don't have to rewrite a paper just start typing words outs and sooner or later your fingers will know where the keys are.

Well, I would say to NOT look at the keyboard when you type. When you have to look at where the letters are, this slows you down. If you do not have all the letters memorized yet, then work on that first. Memorize where they are, and which finger to use. Then once you know where all the keys are, use an online program where you type a lot. For example, if you use MSN Messenger and talk to your friends on there, go on often and type type type without looking. Even answering questions on Yahoo Answers gives you typing practice.

You have to type, type, type. Do not finger pick. Do not look at your fingers typing. These may slow you down at first, but then with practise you will increase your speed.
Try to practise on things you have to write. Letters, homework, your autobiography ;-)
Typing programs are good if you are just starting. But once you know, it is a matter of practise. Try copying a book you are reading.

A lot of good Answers, newmum06 and Techman20 has given good suggestions.
So it comes out that you need to practise, Initially to memorise the keys you may require help and for this thing Nothing better than a Tutor. A lot of Free typing tutors are available on the net.
Diane W given a good link for typing tutors just go and select one I have used Kirans TT and its free.
After memorising the keys you can start typing without looking at the keyboard whatever you think, just try to defeat your mind.
Then take some book and try to copy it, again, without looking at the keyboard. It helps a lot.
But don't forget to Blink your eyes frequently while you are typing while looking at the computer screen. Good Luck!

Try to type along with an audio recording of a book (on CD or tape) or try to type the conversation happening on a sitcom! It is really hard to keep up with the pace that people talk at and still maintain accuracy. This will be a way to speed up your typing wpm. But, like you said, the only real answer is practice!

There are lots of free typing programs you can download that will have you practice typing out passages and certain letters. Hit what keys feel natural - usually the keys on the left side with the left hand, right keys with the right hand; I use my right thumb to hit space bar and my right pinky for enter, but it varies according to what you feel works well for you. I really just got myself into a rhythm through practice, endless endless practice. Once you feel confident, try not looking down at the keyboard and you'll find it's easier than you thought it'd be.
