My husband and I live in the SF Bay Area and are planning to drive to Lake Tahoe on Friday the 22nd to spend Christmas there. We are trying to figure out whether the traffic will be terrible or not - do you think everyone will leave right after work on Friday or will the traffic be more spread out? We've never spent Christmas in Tahoe so we're not sure how busy it is.

Yes, avoid Interstate 80 and Highway 50 during the Friday rush.

Remember, you have the "locals" who commute from Sacramento to Placer or El Dorado counties and they will all be using those same roads.

Best bet is to leave on Thursday!

It is going to be an absolute nightmare through Fairfield/Vacaville. It always is pretty bad there every week night, but a friday before Xmas. Traffic this week has been steadily getting worse. And with the iimpending rain due in on Thursday night, it will only get worse. and depending on whether you go up 50 or 80 that could also play a factor.

Leave as early in the day Friday as you can.

The rich people in Napa Valley are probably already heading up there since they can take that much vacation time. Fairfield and Vacaville have never been that big of a problem for me. (Jamieson Canyon is, but that's all the commuters and you won't be using that road.) Truckee is where you might run into problems with this cold snap. Pack your chains, and leave as early as you possibly can.

Have fun!

Seeing as how Christmas is on Mon. and most people will take off or leave work early on Fri., Fri. is going to be a nightmare to travel no matter where you are going. Take snacks and a book.
