Because there are so many variations, it is not posibble to memorize a single opening and stick to it to the same degree that you can in chess. It is better to learn basic principles (for example there is the proverb "corners gold, sides silver, center grass" describing the relative worth of development in these areas) and build from there. I would recommend Yilun Yang's "Fundamental Principles of Go"

That being said. I have had a fair amount of success using the chinese opening. When I'm feeling lazy I still use it quite often when playing black. Also, simply playing along the 4-4 points on one side (also called the nirensei) is a nice simple method to start off with.

One of the best methods I've found for improving is to consult stronger players. I've often found many people willing to help on Kiseido Go Server. You can also submit your games to the Go Teaching Ladder for review.
