No real cheap way to get around London unfortunately, it has the most expensive transport system in the world.
Oyster card is definately the way to go as the fares are cheaper using this - fares are sometimes double if paying in cash. Two ways to go with Oyster - either prepay where you put credit on it and it gets automatically deducted each time you use it, or if you are going to use transport a lot for three days, a week or a month then get a travelcard for the zones you'll need and it's a heap cheaper.
Things to consider...
- travelcards let you travel on tube, bus or train in the zones you buy for. If you use prepay, you can't use it on trains
- travelcards let you travel anytime of day or night for same price, if using prepay you'll pay a lot more (about double) if you travel before 9.30am
- if you use prepay make sure you always touch in and out with it on every tube journey, otherwise they'll fine you
Best place to get more info is www.tfl.gov.uk, has all prices, tube map with zones etc.
Good luck!
By the way, avoid black cabs, they cost a fortune and traffic in London is always crap. If you have to use a cab, call a licensed minicab if you can and agree a price before ordering.

Grey_Mare: St Pancras is the station for the EAST Midlands. Birmingham is in the WEST Midlands, and trains from Birmingham New St visit Euston station, and from Birmingham Snow Hill and Moor St to Marylebone station. all of the stations are on the sting of "efficient London" (they have been equipped as a procedures in because of the fact the railways ought to go without demolishing high priced assets, regardless of the indisputable fact that lots of early nineteenth century slums have been demolished) and are on the Underground community - it must be worthwhile getting a mixed Travelcard with the cost ticket to London because it particularly is lots extra fee-effective than figuring out to purchase guy or woman journeys on the Underground (£4 funds for each experience in zone a million, or £a million.60 with an Oyster card - £3 refundable deposit is charged once you purchase an Oyster card).

There aren't any trams, the tube is really expensive, buses are the way to go. And to make it cheaper, get an Oyster Card as it will give you discounted travel. You can use the Oyster Card on all forms of public transport in London. An Oyster Card always works out cheaper than buying standard tickets and you can buy one online or at any underground station:

For routes around London use London Transport's journey planner: http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/user/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en

I went to London this summer... using the Underground is by far the cheapest. The London Underground is the best I've ever been on. It'll take you anywhere very easily. Check into an Oyster Pass. It's deals on daily or weekly riding. London is awesome. You'll love it.
