Since everyone here has spoken out about how commercialism bothers them, what are you doing this year that does not involve any at all? Will you make those things lifelong traditions or not?

Nothing about Christmas has to necessarily involve commercialism except for gift-buying. Even that doesn't have to be an "evil" thing if it's kept thoughtful and in the right spirit. But it should always be secondary to spending time with loved ones and celebrating Christ's birth.

We go to Mass for Advent and for Christmas Eve (midnight Mass). We spend time together as a family. That is Christmas for us. These don't have to be made into lifelong traditions. They already are.

On my own, I like to volunteer. I'm not a crusader, doing hundreds of hours. I'd like to, but it isn't realistic with my work schedule. So I just volunteered for an afternoon with the Salvation Army.

Well since I'm a Catholic, I attend the 9 days novena masses to help me prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. This helps me understand my faith more. I have been doing this since I was young and it helps keep me on track on what we are truly celebrating. Giving gifts and receiving them are nice but let not that be the focus of this Season for everyone. I know most of you will agree even the non-Catholics.

I'm not giving greedy, corporate retail giants one cent this year (or any other year). I volunteer regularly and give to charity when I can afford it...so I'll probably do a little extra if I can. And then I plan to spend some quality time with my family and friends. Sharing time and making memories with those who are important to us is what really matters....not making Macys richer.
