Yes she did. To the people watching, it looked like the mission failed and nothing happened, but there were 18 hours of scrambled footage from the camera that was inside the machine with her.
In the original book, a few other people go on the mission with her. When they get there, they are each greeted by someone they know. The aliens explain that they take on the form of something familiar to the travelers, so as not to frighten them.
What I think is so great about the film, however, is that the point isn't about whether or not she met an alien, but it's about her chracter finding her spirituality, and finally having faith in something.

She did contact the aliens. They took the form of her father in order to present a familiar and friendly appreance.
The control tower and scientific observers saw the sphere fall and not go anywhere, so from their prospective she didn't go anywhere. The machine was designed to transport its passenger over fast distances, but it also causes them to experience time differently.
The "proof" was the tape recovered from the onboard camera. The review board dismissed her story because there was nothing except static recorded on the new tape... thing is one of the people inspecting the project actually looked at the ENTIRE tape and she notices that the camera recorded static for the EXACT same amount of time Jodie's character claimed she had been talking to the aliens... to which James Wood's character says "Well, that is interesting." Implying that the length of static actually backs her story of the encounter.

It was aliens who appeared to her in an image she would recognize...the image of her father on the sands of a Florida beach...
That conclusion can be drawn by the fact that as the movie ends one of the White House officials ( I can't remember which) is talking to James Woods and she says...
"All the video that (Jodie Foster) shot was completely blank...
But there's 17 hours of it..."
That tells the audience that she WAS there ... but there is no real proof of that...
But we know the truth...

I don't believe she interacted with aliens. At the end of the movie, once she had done her thing in the contraption, she visited her father.
My guess was that she travelled to another world and that is where she meet up with her father. No one is to know if it was meant to be heaven but he was there.
I know she was looking for aliens but in the end all she found was her father - I don't mean that in a bad way.

Anderson Cooper & Jodie Foster have been "out" for years. and function spoken approximately it. basically no longer politically energetic. SO thats not often being "outed". Anderson's mom is Gloria Vanderbilt .. he does not communicate approximately that lots the two. i do no longer think of it quite is a secret nonetheless.

Yes,she made contact. The whole point of no evidance other than the missing video footage is that,as a species, we need to grow up a bit more before we are ready for more substantial contact.

Aliens, but no one believed her because there was no proof.
It was a "matter of faith." The aliens got in her mind and found that her father meant a lot to her... so they showed her that.

That was a nicely posed problem the film gave us. But as James Woods says, the 12 minute gap...
A very thoughtful and interesting film.
