Well for starters, gay means a sexual orientation or a sexual and or romantic preference. Then there are also people who have the sexual orientation of being gay and also living a gay lifestyle and also a gay or queer identity.

Transgender is not really a sexual preference nor a sexual orientaion. It is more of a identity. Transgender is the state of one's "gender identity" (self-identification as male, female, both or neither) not matching one's "assigned gender" (identification by others as male or female based on physical/genetic sex). Transgender does not imply any specific form of sexual orientation (transgender people may identify as queer, heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, pansexual or asexual.)

Transgender - describing a wide range of persons whose gender does not conform to social norms. It is referenced by the last letter of the widely-used acronym “GLBT,” meaning “gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender”.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines “transgender” as referring to people whose identity "does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender, but combines or moves between these." This definition elides many complexities of transgender identity, but it has the benefit of conveying the ideas of ambiguity, combination and movement of identity.

There can be some difficulty in defining the term “transgender,” and the term “gender identity or expression,” which is often used in policies to refer to transgenders. The term “transgender” refers to a number of different identities. It was originally created in the 1980s to refer to those who live in the opposite sex role, but who do not opt for genital surgery. Since then, however, it has taken on a different meaning, being an umbrella term to denote transsexuals, transvestites, cross-dressers and anyone else whose “gender identity” or “gender expression” is variant from the dimorphic binary norm.

Transgender individuals are those who feel that they are not one of the two dichotomous genders (male or female). They may feel they are a mixture of male and female, neither, or a 'third gender' that is totally different. Transgenders often include masculine women, feminine men, and so on, although there are some people who look 'normal' (whatever that means), but can still identify as transgender in their minds. They, like transvestites, are completely happy in their bodies- they do not want to change them at all, just acknolwedge that they aren't entirely men or women in the way we currently define men and women. Like any non-transgender person, they can be gay, straight, bisexual, asexual, polyamorous, monogamous, whatever.

Gay individuals are those who are attracted to the same sex as themselves, that's all. That means that a transgender person can, indeed, be gay, for although they are transgender (perceive their gender to be different), their sex is the same. Gender is the way you act, dress, look, and behave; sex is your chromosomes, hormones, genitals, and other secondary sex characteristics. Transgender people can also be straight, it just depends on the person.

I hope that's helped you out. I'm not even going to begin to ask what you mean when you say "which is best" . . . just know that they are both fine, perfectly normal ways to be, and that sexual orientation and gender identity have no direct value; it's what you do with your lives that give the designations of better, best, more, most, etc..

What do you mean "decide which is best" are you having a competition or trying to identify yourself?
Gay = homosexual
Transgendered = Feeling as though you were born as the wrong gender. If you have surgery to fix it, you become a Transexual (I believe... I think that's right...)
