I would like to change a fairly well established site from ex. www.xyz.net to www.xyz.com.

What is the best way to do this? I want to help my search engine results not hurt them.

p.s. I do own both domains (.com and .net).

I am just wondering how to switch it.

301 redirect, link, alias, etc. (i don't know what all of these mean)

For the search engines you have to use a 301 redirect. Put this in the .htaccess file on your old domain:

RedirectMatch 301 ^(.*)$ http://www.newdomain.com

Any file requested on the old domain will be redirected to the file of the same name at newdomain.com.

You would just change your index.html on your *.net site to direct to the
other index page on the *.com site.

Please change your browser to my new site at http://www.new.com

IF you use the .htaccess then your search engines will slowly stop going to that site.
