I have a older compaq and a newer compaq and I was wondering if there is any way to take the memory off of the older computer and put it on the new computer. I also wanted to know how difficult it would be take the modem and the eithernet cable off of the older computer and put it onto the newer computer.

I dunno about the RAM it might be compatible, but I am not sure. The modem and ethernet cards are very easy. Open up the computer and unscrew them from the slot, then gently pull them out of the port. Then do the opposite to put them in the other computer. They go into the slots on the motherboard.

The memory in the older PC will only work if it's the same as what's in the newer PC. You'll probably have to open both boxes and compare.

You should be able to remove the network card and modem card from the old PC and install them into the new one, unless they're part of the motherboard.

You should also be able to remove the hard drive from the older PC and use it as a slave drive in the newer one.

Unfortunately, the steps to do this all aren't that simple. Maybe you can get a friend to do it for you.

If your newer computer is brand new like within the last few months your older computer hardware probably isnt compatible with the newer stuff. And the second part of your question about the modem are you talking about an external dsl/cable modem or an internal 56k modem. I cant tell what you mean by reading your question. The older computer's RAM may not be compatible with the new system's motherboard. Please go through the motherboard's manual to check which type of RAM is supported by the new system's motherbaortd and which one is installed in the older system. In addition, even if the RAM is compatible, then also, the RAM speed of the older PC would be much slower than the RAM speed of the newer PC as as result, when you install the older PC's RAM to the new one, all the RAM chips will start functioning at the lower speed. To check which all RAM chips are installed in both your PCs, in case the motherboard manuals are not available, then download "Everest Free Edition" from

Install the application, run it and clickon "Motherboard" at the left hand pane and then click on SPD.

(1) the old memory may not be computable with the new computer,
(2) the new computer will have a Ethernet card already fitted, and it will most likely have a modem fitted also. if it don't then get back to me and I will walk you through it
