The best way to avoid rat problems is to prevent the infestation. That is, making sure rats don't feel invited or tempted to come into your home is the best way to fight them, and the best way to keep them out is to rat-proof your house.
Rats love messy rooms . Like mice and other rodents, rats love it when you have a messy room because it gives them more places to hide as they travel from room to room. So, clean your room!
Rats love a dirty kitchen. Rats will eat anything we humans eat, and as consumers of the same food, it's a good idea to keep this food out of their reach. Clean up crumbs, oil, and other remnants of last night's cuisine.
Rats love food that's left out. The best way to prevent rat infestation is to put your food in proper containers, thus eliminating the temptation for rats to come into your home looking for a meal.
Rats don't just hang out in kitchens . Go through your home and find places where you may have dropped food or other edible substances, and vacuum it up.
Rats will infest your home. Rats find plenty of ways to get into your home, and plenty of places to live. Make sure your house is sealed from foundation to roof. Make sure wood piles and garbage containers are a safe distance from the house. Make sure boxes of fabrics are kept on shelves.
Rat Poison and Rat Traps
Step 1 is of course a preventative measure, and if you're thinking it doesn't work, then there are more active alternatives. Rat traps are probably the easiest solution because if the rat is dead it ensures that it won't come back. Then again, if you're dealing with an entire community of rats, poisons will help you get the whole lot of them. Just be careful when you're using poisons, because when rats eat poison they usually crawl into a hard to reach place and die.
After completing these two easy tasks, you should have no more rats scurrying around in your walls or chewing away at your cereal boxes in the middle of the night.

Poison or trap or a ferret it. Probably more than 1, as rats in estrous mate about 500 times a day. The problem with poison is they get sick and very thirsty. If a dog or cat eats the poisoned rat, it can kill the pet. Also, they will hide and die in a wall and you will be reminded by that death smell. Rats are smart. I've heard that just the smell of a ferret will scare rats into leaving. See if you can borrow one or some cage cleanings.

Rats breed like bunnies - but if you've only seen one - there's a good chance it wandered in for warmth, freaked at seeing you, and is out of the house.
If you see another, then you may have a problem. Best solution is really the old fashioned one - one or more cats...
The other option is an exterminator and/or traps... exterminator means poisons in the house, which is risky with kids and/or pets...
As long as your place is reasonably clean... you should be fine... but maybe a cat, or a dog would be a good acquisition...

Oh my gosh. We had a problen like this when we moved in our house. We found the places they were coming from. Put those mouse traps that are clear and very sticky right next to those spots. I put a little piece of grahm cracker in the middle of the trap. Man the first night we caught like 3 big ones!!! They like to walk along the base boards, so putting them in the corners are good. Be careful to pick them up in the morning if you have kiddos. This next step is very important. You have to go around the whole house in and out and seal every little holes or gaps. We used clear silicone. You can use white caulk too. You can buy the green blocks of poison and put them between the walls. Do pick up food or clothes that gets left on the floor. Oh I have a no eating in the bedrooms rule too.We did all this and have been rat free ever since. I hope this helps.

Rat poison, traps and a cat! If your problem is severe call your "local pest exterminators," when those white suitmen with gas mask show up your rats will run or die by the fumes.
