Then like me, your most brilliant performances will be in the shower, or alone on the highway....
Its alright - I sing like a sonofagun - and if people manage to hear a few notes I just smile sweetly while they stand there amazed.
Then I tell them "oh, no I couldn't sing for people - its something that I do solely because I enjoy it. Somehow, singing for other people takes away from the experience" eh - somehow I can act on stage, but please don't ask me to sing.
'Course, if you want to sing for other people, there is only one way...DO IT! you'll either get over it eventually, or you wont. But you wont know unless you try. Also, you might want to talk to a doctor about prescribing a blood pressure med for anxiety. The entire London symphony orchestra takes them before going on for just that reason.
No kidding - thespians honor.

Try to start singing to close friends or family and make sure they think your good, because well.. we've all seen American Idol and crappy people think they rock. I'm not saying your one of them, but yea. If they say your good try out for a Church Choir or a singing group so the spotlight isn't on you 24/7 and you can ease your way into singing powerfully in public. From their try to get leads in the singing group and when your fully confident try out for some shows or plays! Hope this method helped, Happy Holidays.

I used to have the same problem. The only thing I can say is that you need to try. Do it first in front of a few friends or family members and then gradually sing in front of more people. Work on this slowly. If you don't try, you'll regret it. If God gave you the ability to sing, honor Him by using it and sharing your gift with others.
Good luck!

You face your fear little by little. Sing to the people you're comfortable with, then grow the audience one at a time til it's no big deal. Just explain to them you have a fear of singing in public you need to get over and just do it.

I am a singer also. Of course, getting up infront of people is a scary thing. I get the jitters before every show. But once I'm up there and get going I settle right down. I used to be in a rock band but now I only sing for Jesus.

Perhaps try going to a Karaoke bar. There will be people like you who won't judge you and could support you and you could make new friends. People who go to Karaoke bar are all levels of ability to sing. Go and watch for a while and you can see for yourself and hopefully become more comfortable to join in. Also perhaps go with your friends you can give support. Most importantly, just have fun.

RECORDING isn't usually done in live performances unless by professionals, but you need to remember it's not like there are many people who can get up on stage and do a bette rjob than you. You need confidence, but think about performers with headsets on in the studio, they practice, listen to how they sound and think about how they want to change. You won't amount to anything if you are afraid to try, sure there is always risk of failure when you try but there is CERTAIN failure if you never do. "Do not take counsul of your fears."

There are some psycologists that hypnotize people for fears just like this. I don't know how badly you want to perform, but if you are willing to spend the money on something like that, it might be worth the money!
