Because wars were fought in far off lands. The 3 super powers were evenly matched, so the home land was never in danger just the country they fought in. So since the home land was safe it was just like peace.
Like vietnam, we sent troop to fight for the south and russia send to to fight for the norht. No matter the outcome the usa was in no danger of being attacked because we were to powerful. so since our country was safe from attack it is like peace.
this a really a good book and you should take your time a read it.

Well, I believe it is simply a matter of opinion. In many ways war is the hypothetical way peace. The ultimate goal of war should be acquiring peace, hence it is supposed to be its precursor and the affirmations WAR IS PEACE would simply come to mean that war is an instrument to obtain peace. Those are my thoughts, what do you think?

The point is that war isn't peace. But people just accept that slogan, even though it's contradictory nonsense. Just like Americans accept nonsensical political ideas like, "We've got to fight them over there so that we don't have to fight them over here." Or that we're liberating Iraq by invading it and making it subject to our control. Or that we're building democracy by telling the Iraqi's what they should think and do instead of letting the people choose what they want themselves. (Giving the "demos" some "krasy")

There is a very strong temptation to give you a complex, but very wrong, answer. Just read the book. If you can't get interested in 1984 you might as well just quit and grab a broom anyway.

Read all of Chapter 9 (I just did last night), and it will fully explain it to you. I would try to explain it, but it would take a long time, since Ch.9 has to be the longest in the book (like 40 pages)!

It's like the oxymoron of "fighting for peace".
Good book, enjoy.

Because in war, man is secretly satisfied, whereas in peace, man is in constant unrest, itching for excitement.

If you'd read this excellent and still relevant book, you'd know the answer.

Believe me, in your case, ignorance is NOT strength.
