A lot depends on the type of gamer he is. There are several genre's to choose: Racing, Sports, Role Playing, Fighting, First Person Shooters, Classic, etc. As you can see quite a plethora of choices!
When in doubt, a good resource are game review sites. The following link goes to a site that gives scores on 1-10 basis with a genre listed next to it.
If he is a typical 'guy', the fact that you got him a 360 will make his so excited, you could get any game and I am sure he will love it!

He likes shoot them and kill them type games? Well, the biggest selling and most popular game out there right now is Gears of War. Great game with intense graphics and intuitive controls. It should be on the top of your list of games to get. Other "Shoot'em up" games for 360 are Rainbow 6 Vegas, Call of Duty 3, Splinter Cell Double Agent, and if you feel really daring... Dead Rising.
Gears of War and Dead Rising will be the most fun.

Oblivion, Gears Of conflict, Lord of the jewelry:The conflict for midsection Earth II ~~~~i might say halo 2 yet even tho u can play on 360 its not a 360 interest in simple terms look ahead to the third one to return out.
