It sounds very familiar and is used in a context referring to other camera/video terminology, but I can't find anything to verify it with on the web - simply that it is a term for a basket fishermen use and refers to a part on a sewing machine. Anyone? Anyone?

Not "reel"; I know what "reel" is. It sounds very familiar and is used in a context referring to other camera/video terminology, but I can't find anything to verify it with on the web - simply that it is a term for a basket fishermen use and refers to a part on a sewing machine.

The second definition you found gives the clue.

creel (krl) KEY

NOUN:

A wicker basket, especially one used by anglers for carrying fish.

A frame for holding bobbins or spools in a spinning machine.

Not neccesarily a sewing machine.

I have heard the word "CREEL" used to describe the spool or reel that is used to roll on exposed film while in complete darkness or within a developing bag. The creel sits inside the developing can with the film attached. the purpose is to keep the film from touching itself while in the solution. The creel is then turned or spun by a knob or crank while the roll of film is attached. This action mixes and saturates the film until it developes.
