I watched the movie Silent Hill some time ago but rewatched it recently and once again when I got to the ending I was utterly confused. Actually can someone tell me what was happening during the whole movie b/c when I thought I knew something I was like huh??? Was the girl and her mom a figment of the husband's imagination??

The town of Silent Hill had burned away from a Coal mine fire and all the people who died turned to ghosts that haunt Silent Hill. When the mom, daughter and cop went there, they got stuck in the "haunted town." When the dad showed up, he was in the real world.
They were in the same place, but kind-of three different realms. There is a fog realm, a hell realm, and the true version of the town. The mom is stuck in the fog/hell realm, and the dad is in the real town. They cannot see each other. The mom, cop, and daughter are in almost a parallel dimension. They are not dead.
The ending:
The mom is looking for the demon that lives in the basement of the hospital. She finds it and they talk.
She tells the mom what is happening:
Alessa is the girl that is tormenting the town. Whenever the sirens sound, the town turns from fog to hell. She is holding the town that way because of what they did to her.
Alessa gave birth to 2 bastard children. The town was a cult and witch-hunters. They saw this as a sin, and they chained up Alessa and burned her alive. Before she died, the chain broke and knocked the fire pit over. This caused a horrible fire that went out of control. Alessa was taken to an intensive care unit and taken care of by a nurse.
The ''demon'' the mom is talking to is Alessa, the girl that was *almost burned alive at the church.
There were two offspring of Alessa. One was Rose, the girl that walks thru the town and haunts it because of the evil things they were doing. She claimed that she would haunt the town until she got revenge.
A long time ago, Rose (a bastard daughter of Alessa) was made fun of at school. She ran to the bathroom to cry, where the janitor Colin raped her. *(Colin was the guy bound up in barbed wire in the bathroom)
The other twin was a girl hidden away in an orphanage. The Mom's daughter was adopted. Her daughter was the girl from Silent Hill. She was one of the bastard children. That's why she kept drawing things from Silent Hill. That's where she was from.
After the mom is done talking to Alessa, Rose (the evil twin that haunts the town) possessed the mom. She did this because she needed to get into the church, but the church people would never let her. She wanted to get revenge.
The mom let her possess her, and she went to the church. The leader of the church called the Mom a blasphemer of their religion and stabber her in the heart. When she stabbed her, Rose came out through her blood and healed the mom in the process. Rose turns the blood into darkness and it rots away the floor of the church. This lets Alessa rise up in her hospital bed from below.
Alessa kills everyone with barbed wire except the 3 people that helped her, the mom, rose, and the evil twin. The two twins become one as they should have been and the world turns bag to fog. **NOTICE: this is a clue in the movie. The world turned back to fog, not the real town.
The mom and daughter drive back home where they go inside their house, still in the fog.
The dad is sleeping on the couch. He is still in the real world. The mom and daughter come in the house and see nothing. They are still trapped in this parallel fog universe forever.

No one understands the movie unless they play the games. I for one play the games, and the movie made perfect sense to me, but my mom was clueless. The mom and her daughter didn't actually die, like most people assume. They were trapped in an alternate reality. While they existed in one realm, Silent Hill, the father existed in our reality. Once you enter Silent Hill you never leave, as the game Silent Hill Two taught. That's why at the end they couldn't see each other but could feel the other's presence. They were in the same place, just in a different realm. It kind of goes along with the realms of ghosts and such. We live in the land of the living, and they live in the realm of the dead. Well, in the movie, there's the actual realm, and then the realm of Silent Hill.

The mum and the daughter both get killed from the car accident (beginning of the movie)
Ther are two worlds, world of silent hill a.k.a Foggy world (the world that they died but makes the viewer they're still alive) and the real world
