Yes

Purely from a physical, material standpoint may be not. But the Grateful Dead were tuned into the cosmic forces. They played as though lost in a a trance.... and at times it felt as though some grand and divine force was acting through them.

No one could bring you to deeper, more ecstatic places than the Dead.

They are way beyond a jam band. Listen to their 2nd sets from 1989-1992, no jam band ever did stuff like that. Even the early Dark Stars are beyond jamming.

I think that the Grateful Dead are/where often much closer to the avante guarde of jazz. Ornette Coleman even sat in with the Dead in 1993 for a 2nd set. The chemistry was great.

But when the Dead jammed, they had a telepathy that is probably the best. The Allmans had it to and so did Phish. Coltrane and his classic quartet were great too, just listen to the Newport '63 album if you want to hear some amazing playing

I won't try to pretend I've ever seen them perform live seeing as I wasn't born yet but from all the music I've heard and all the concerts I've seen on DVD, I'd have to say they were one of the greatest jam bands.

Their music gives me an undescribable (good) feeling....and no you don't have to be a hippie or be an LSD user to enjoy them, seeing as I am neither.

And The Professor: you don't need to have tons of number 1 hits to be an awesome band. Just look at Led Zeppelin.

No, not really. The only song that was any good by the Grateful Dead was Touch Of Gray.

They can't be due to the fact that they never had a Hit Song that was #1 on the charts.
