Yes Gerald Ford....A really good center for Michigan.

Attending the University of Michigan as an undergraduate, Ford became the center for the school's football team and helped the Wolverines to undefeated seasons in 1932 and 1933. His number 48 jersey has since been retired by the school. At Michigan, Ford was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and washed dishes at his fraternity house to earn money to pay for college expenses. While at Michigan, Ford turned down contract offers from the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers of the National Football League following his graduation in 1935 in order to attend law school.[4] As part of the 1935 Collegiate All-Star football team, Ford played against the Chicago Bears in an exhibition game at Soldier Field

Hopefully Andrew is right, and he isn't just wasting his time. Anyway, his description of how the term "football" came to be applied (with equal validity) to a series of different sports around the world is spot on. And anyone with a passing familiarity with the various codes knows that the American variety is probably the most dangerous -- it is an uutterly brutal, bone-crushing sport. Anyone who doubts this just needs to check out the absolutely horrifying stats on the incidence of early-onset dementia amongst ex-NFL players. Apparently the helmets aren't that much use after all.

It was Gerald Ford, who was president from 1974-1977, not 1972-1976.

Ford played at Michigan....but was not an All-American.
Supreme Court justice Whizzer White was an All-American football player in college....but I didn't know any US President had been. (But if I had to bet, I'd put my money on Teddy Roosevelt.)
