In the fall of 1958, a fire destroyed the central part of our home. For the next 2 months my parents,Grandmother and youngest sister lived with an elderly aunt; my 2 brothers were at a cousins house; and my sister and I were at another neighbors house. In late Nov. my youngest sister was born and it wasn't until a week before Christmas that we were able to move back home. The best part of that Christmas was that we were all back home together and we had a new sister. Gifts were sparse-my 2 year old sister got a rag doll and each of us older kids got a toothbrush and a pair of gloves. Mom told us when we were older how she decided that never again would we have another sparse Christmas. Starting that next year she saved $5.00 to $10.00 every 2 weeks from her factory paycheck specifically for Christmas. We never again did without for Christmas.

I remember every year sitting at the kitchen table rolling out brigadieros (Brazilian chocolate carmel candy) with my mom, my grandma and my sister. When we were younger, it was fun to watch and as we got older, help out. When we were grown, we would sit at the table, have an open bottle of wine and us four women rolling out the sticky candy and laughing the entire time...we did the same for Christmas dinner. My grandmother now lives a 2 hour flight from us, and EVERY YEAR, my sister and I comment on missing her, and wanting her here with us--how much fun we would have, so we call her...it's just not the same though. I miss my oma!
