often times when a person is unable to urinate it is because he/she is tense or anxious. the sound of running water has been proved to be relaxing. when a person is relaxed he/she also relaxes the muscles. this is also why industrial/organizational psychologists suggest putting aquariums in places like doctors offices--places where there tend to be a higher level of stress or tension

because too many moms sat too many kids in the bathroom and ran water to give them the idea to go ... now they can't stop
