Hormones. Different hormones do different things. During your cycle the walls of the uterus become thickened preparing for a fertilized egg. The period occurs when no fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall. The period is the thickened uterine lining washing out Ovulation takes place when an egg matures, and breaks out of the ovary, so to speak. Really the two things are very different.
