An effective thing to compare are the types of economy both had. You can tie in the amount of railroads, iron foundries, textile mills and agriculture. Population figures will be helpful. Compare the number of people, contrast the fact that slaves were not used in the Confederacy as troops, but many freed slaves and Northern born African-Americans were soldiers and sailors for the North.

I would do some research on different aspects of each during and after the war.
For instance, the North was much more industrialized. Compare the two. See if you can find figures comparing their economies.
You also might want to talk about military similarities/differences. Maybe also differences in public sentiment.

well the south during the war was so poor both after and during the war and the north wasnt the feeling of the norht changed for the better after and the south didnt for a long time
