I'm trying to support the idea that Hamlet is held prisoner by words, such as his inane dealings with Polonious

Possibly, in a way I can see what you are saying. Perhaps Hamlet is using dialog to maintain an impression of insanity in order acquire enough time and space to ascertain his true feelings and a safe course of action, you know living with the man who killed your father and married your mother.

Hamlet is the ultimate fencesitter. Unable to make a decision of his own, he used the opinions of others as an excuse for inaction. Is the ghost of his father real or not? Should he take the advice of others or not? Actually, while loving the play, I quite dislike the main character.

I feel that Hamlet is actually using words to his advantage, as with playing with Polonius and making him look like a fool
