We installed a new hot water heater today, but it doesn't seem to be warming, how long should it take to heat up a 50gallon hot water heater. Should there be any noises letting you know it is heating?

Is it gas/ electric? How high do you have the thermostat set, is it only on pilot? No, if it is electric, there will be no sound, if it is gas, you should hear the fire ignite and a slight hissing sound of the gas being pumped in to burn.
I would bet you have it on Pilot and have not turned it up to the "Burn" position
It should only take about an hour for the thing to heat the water the first time, at max

Assuming it is a gas water heater:
You will hear the burners turning on.
You can also see the flame through the small trap door.

Once everything is connected as it should be, the gas turned back on, the pilot lit, one generally is instructed to wait a few minutes to perform the last step >> turning the knob to On or Burn.
You should at this time see the flames through the trap door in which you lit the pilot light.

If it's an electric water heater, make sure you have turned the circuit back on. You should start noticing warming at the faucets in 30 to 45 minutes for this 50 gallon heater.

Either gas or electric should be able to hear or start within a few minutes and, a tankless is the way to go if you were rich. I would.
If it's electric use your ohm meter or a hot wire check to see if the two heating elements are working. I sure hope you waited for it to fill before you turned it on, if you didn't and it's electric you might have burned he elements.
Gas you should here it right away. either way you should have hot water within thirty minutes.

electric maybe an hour or so, gas would be less... you didnt say which. and yes the actual warming of the water would make some noises at first....but silly question? did you turn the water valves back on and fill it? if electric did you make sure proper voltage is there at connections and its live? also if it has a reset is it tripped?

It only takes an hour or so to heat up the water after installing it.

Next time install a tankless heater. It heats water on demand immediately, and you're not heating 50 gallons of water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week !!! Substantial energy savings for us all !!!
