I'm only a junior, but I'm already freaked out. What is about the average GPA and SAT score you have to have. I go to and expensive private college prepatory school, but I'm worried that since my grades aren't amazing because my classes are so hard that I will never get into a good college. Does going to a prestigious high school help at all, even if my GPA is only like a 3.4???

Hey I'm a senior in high school. Just chill. If you have a GPA of 3.4, that is a limiting factor in attending those "prestigious" colleges (Ivy League, etc). But keep in mind though, that, it's not where you went to college, it's what you learn there. A 3.4 is a good enough GPA to get into quite a number of good and great colleges. Your SAT score can help you. If you have a new SAT score of over 2000, you're set for a pretty decent college. Oh, and don't worry so much about the writing section. It's really new, so colleges are pretty much ignoring it for right now. Even if your SATs in the 1800 range, you're still above average for SAT scores.

Don't forget to also consider extracurriculars? Do you have any special activities that you do? Any athletics? Are you involved in any clubs? Another thing that can pull things in your favor are teacher/counselor recommendations. If you have good relationships with faculty, it can help.

Last, don't worry so much, it'll kill you. I'm already stressing enough as it is, and I really don't want to think about it.

Feel free to message me for any other help. :)

I think it's wonderful that you chose that career path. I believe people should major in what they love to do, instead of worry about how many job offers they will have when they graduate. Applying to college is difficult if you don't have the best skills in essay writing. Make sure to start ahead of time. You will need the time to brainstorm for ideas and have teachers to help you edit. Getting into college is difficult depending on what college you want to attend. If you want to go to the top schools of the country you need a very competitive GPA and test scores, or a plethora of extracurriculars, or both. If you're an underclassman, you should make a brag sheet to document everything you've done throughout high school, similar to a resume. If you're not aiming that high, the mediocre student can still go to a good state school.

If you go now to a prep school you have lots of choices. It is about money and if you can buy it a good school is possible. There are so many good private schools, Knox in Illinois, Wittenberg in Ohio, Carleton in Minnesota. But don’t overlook the public schools. Always apply to the big three? or how ever many you have, in your state. All of the land grant schools, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa are great. Obviously I’m in the Midwest. But every state has a land grant and all are good. It is what you do when you get there that counts. But make sure you send in the financial aid forms early, meaning fall of next year, everyone gets something.

Hey, I am a high-school senior at a religious private school (kind of a blend of a parochial and preparatory school) which prides itself in getting its students into Ivy League schools. I have a similar GPA to yours, along with really good SAT and SAT II scores and a good essay. Honestly, college is tough to get into now, but everyone has their strengths. Mine is my essay and my scores. (I'm banking on those to get me in!! haha, jk. sort of...) My best friend's are by far her grades (not my forte, but what can you do?) Colleges know that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and they look at a whole range of factors. Focus on your strengths, and don't stress about not getting in to the school of your dreams--you will have an amazing experience wherever you go. Believe me, you will be fine! And listen, don't waste high-school feeling stressed about college, it isn't worth it. Just enjoy everything as it happens, and jump every hurdle as you arrive at it, ok? (Also, I sympathize with the tough classes, I also do the whole honors/AP thing...colleges DO take that into consideration, I promise!!) Good luck!

You will do fine as long as your ACT and SAT scores are above average, and given your GPA they probably will be, you should be able to get into almost any college you choose.

Just do it.

If you have any fear or reservations about "applying" you don't feel like you have confidence to be there in the first place.

Just go for it.

Apply, write your introduction letter, pay the money.

It's as easy as that!

Just do it!

by the way 3.4 is fantastic.

You've got jitters..

just go for it
you will get into college.

you're a junior!?
you have time to work up that gpa if you think you need to
but i'm telling you that it's perfect!

Go for it! Your future awaits you!

Not too hard, just harder :) Don't be intimidated though, just do a lot of research to find out where you would fit in best and learn how to sell yourself to the admissions people by highlighting your achievements, goals and best qualities. And your gpa is great in my opinion!

Don't worry. My wife teaches at our local university. Apparently, they're letting anyone attend college these days.

Sadly, as long as you can pay tuition, you're in. Of course, rather than raising the academic entry standards to cap entrance, they're raising the fees.
