I teach beginners Ballroom dance class in college. The ones that I teach are geared towards complete beginners, i.e. people who never ever danced before. You should expect that absolutely everything will be explained to you. Well, you need to know where is left and right, but I'm sure you got that. If you feel that not everythig is explained you should speak up and ask questions.

The material taught and the pace of the class depends on the teacher and on the purpose of the class. Classes geared towards social dancing are ususally a bit slower and geared towards learning more steps. Dancesport classes are faster paced, geared towards technique and towards dance education. You won't learn as many steps, but you will learns them well and you will look good doing them.

If you are talking about ballet I relleally don't know what to expect for beginner ballet in college, but I think beginner means no dance experience. If you are taking dance in college for a career, it is mostly *information" about it, not learning how to dance from scratch because by the time you're in college it is too late to decide to start dancing with a goal to become a professional ballet dancer. So it is still would be a beginner class, but I think some kind of dance background will be expected.

Well I didn't take a college class but I did take a beginner belly dance class at a dance studio. It was fun and it didn't matter if you didn't know the first thing about dance, most people there didn't.
But I'd say, find the name of the professor who teaches it and email them or go talk to them and find out if it is for everyone or mostly dance majors, that might give you a better idea.
Good luck!

I took a couple beginning classes in college. If you have absolutely no dancing experience you might find the class challenging, but you will NOT be the only one. Chances are, you will enjoy it... and if you don't you can always drop the class!

I'm taking modern/ ballet my sophomore year of college this fall. I'm 19 also. Try college, or rec centers and maybe even dance studios to see if they have adult classes. i wish you luck : )
