Where you live and work would no longer be connected, land would only have value as farms except in scenic locations, national borders could no longer be controlled, police couldn't catch up with criminals, or even keep them in prisons. Anybody could pop up in your home at any time. It would fundamentally change all the institutions of society into a world we would not recognize. There is at least a 50-50 chance that the drastic changes would frighten people so much it would be made illegal.

Well, airlines, and the motor industry would lobby for types of restrictions and the government would more then likely comply. So it wouldn't be easy to come by.
Hypothetically if the airlines and motor industry didn't get their way: It would change the face of transportation. The flood gates for tourism would open all across the world. You would see an increase in vacation advertising and revenue. This would help out a lot of local economies.
You would see the many airlines and auto makers go out of business and lower prices, and add more features/services. A lot of people would be out of work but at the same time the price of fuel would probably go down. People that invested in the pill before it hit big would be pulling in a lot of money. We would have a bull market, stocks would sky rocket. This would put a lot of people into different spending brackets.

It would have fantastic effects on the economy as it would completely change the way we get from point A to point B. all (or most since cargo can't swallow pills) transport would come to a halt. Car, train, and airplane manufacturers would shut down, hundreds of thousand or millions of jobs would be lost. On the other hand, pollution would no longer be a problem. We'd have huge parklands where roads used to be and it would be a greener, healthier world...with many many many new unemployed...and the bus drivers I know are grouchy as it is...

This is by far the best question I have encountered, not because it is difficult or ascetic or obscure. Simply because it demonstrates the grasp the person asking has on the field of economics. Perhaps it is he/she who should be answering it.
Such a pill would cause an explosion of economic activity. Not long after it's release we will have found a cure for AIDS, poverty would be virtually eradicated and economists around the world will be sleeping restfully.

I'm just guessing, but I would bet this was a question asked in either your English, Sociology, or Psych class?
