I blog and I write in my journal to track my life. When you go back and read things, you can tell alot about how you were dealing with things in your life at that particular point in your life. You also see just what you are really like inside. Your words about yourself should not lie. So if you are being honest, then you will see how much you have evolved from one situation to the next.

A "book" can be a really good to find historical events you would otherwise not recall. Some of the info might help you solve a problem.I have met individuals with journals of documented facts ,some surely a waste of time, but it can cause some consternation, and surprise when someone can state time, place, and what was said 20 years ago. That may be extreme, and unnessary but it is dissarming..Yeah,keep a "book".

There are many reasons: it allow one to communicate with future generations, it helps one clear their head through exploring a concern, it allows one to explore ideas (blog type entries), voice an opinion, express emotion, provides reference when one wants to remember details of an event, records what life was like in that moment, etc. I know it can change one's mood.
I think the one central answer that only someone keeping the journal can provide is who are they expressing their thoughts towards? The intended audience would change a reason for the journal.

I keep a journal (not an on line one) just because it makes my thoughts clearer when I can write them all down on paper. I also like looking back at old journal entries and laughing at how stupid I sound or seeing how I overcame certain obstacles in my life.

The reason i kept one is because i had all this stuff i wanted to talk about, but i guess i might have had low self esteem or something and i didn't think anybody would be interested, but it interested me, so whenever I'd write it down, i felt like i told somebody and it just felt better.
plus there are certain things I'd be so scared I'd one day forget, that i would write them down so i could look back one day and relive what i felt/saw.
it also helped me sort out stuff cuz when you go back and realize what you wrote sometimes you figure out how stupid some of your ideas are and so you stop them before you get any further.

I've kept journals for years. It has helped me cope with stressful times in my life.Keeping a journal is very therapeutic,it helps me vent.I can pour out all of feelings into my journal and not be judged. In times of happiness, sadness,my journal is there for me.Plus,I'll leave them for my daughter after I'm gone.

I keep a journal that I write in at the end of every day.
Just to express my feelings and emotions on paper. Its a good way to reflect on yourself and even understand yourself better.
Its a good way to let out what you feel, instead of overeating or drinking or something like that.
It is somewhat soothing.
