36x^2 - 4y^2 = 4(9x^2 - y^2) = 4 (3x + y)(3x - y)

If you would take the first step and factor out the 4 that is common to both terms, I believe that the answer would literally smack you in the face.

4(9x^2 - y^2)

Now, please try to visualize what that would factor into.

ITS SIMPLE
36x^2 - 4y^2 = 4(9x^2 - y^2) (TAKE 4 OUTSIDE OF BRACE)

= 4 (3x + y)(3x - y) (AS WE KNOW (X^2-Y^2)=(X-Y)(X+Y))
