What are they doing to reduce air pollution, and what would happen if the UN stopped being invovled?

They hold conferences every year and issue progress reports. They have no power to force any nation to do anything. All they can do is accumulate data and offer suggestions. I suggest you look at the UN website for more accurate information. I notice that the news media give very little space or time to the conferences or the information they disseminate, except for the BBC.
For example, at this year's conference, the statistics showed that the United States is responsible for 25% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, but the UN can do nothing to compel them to cut back.

if they stopped being involved, we might actually solve some problems.
