I enjoyed playing Anarchy Online for a while. I've heard Second Life is really fun, but I don't think that's technically an RPG.

World of Warcraft currently has the biggest player base in the US right now. Worldwide, the Lineage 1,2 have the most due to their korean subscribers. Oh and City of Heroes is pretty big too.
Anyways, it really depends on what you want. World of Warcraft is heavily based on quests, while Lineage is has more to do with long leveling hours and PvPs. Games such as Guild Wars requires only about a week of leveling and its pure PvP after. You can also go for the classics like Ultima Online, Everquest or Runescape. Dont expect good graphics from them tho...
If you are trying to play for free, then there's Ragnarok, (like someone mentioned above) or Lineage 2, which also has many private servers.
I would recommand browsing www.ncsoft.com
that company specializes in Online RPGs... actually, all of their games are MMORPGs... so yea.. go give it a try

Heres a good online RPG game. Its a multiplayer game too.
Its called Zeus' Legacy.
Free,fun,worthwhile,and non-download.

I use to think my bf was a dork for playing Ultima Online, but I started playing a few days ago and I love it! You can make your own clothes, you can build your own furniture, have a house and decorate it, you can tame animals, you can cast spells...you can mine there is so much to this game, my bf has been playing for 7yrs already and he still has not done everything there is to do on it! Definetley Ragnarok Online. You can play on the offical server (note you have to pay for that) or you can go and play at one of the many 100s of FREE private servers. www.rotop100.com has a good list of the best of the best free private servers. I reccomend either Blackout Ro or azrealro if you do decide to join.

role playing games are the best. I don't know many though... maybe Runescape?
