Find the height of a tree with angles 17˚ and 15˚. The angles are seperated by 31.4 feet.

You have two unknowns: the height of the tree (call it x) and the distance from the base of the tree to the 17-degree position.

So tan 17 deg = y / x
And tan 15 deg = y / (x + 31.4)

If you fill in the values for tan 17 and tan 15, you'll have two equations in two unknowns (x and y).
At that point ......................................... DYOH!
