Potassium is an extremely reactive element with a valence of +1. As such, it is not found in its metallic state, but in combination with other elements, or as a cation in water or other solvents. Common rocks containing potassium include potassium felspars (orthoclase, microcline and sanidine), micas (muscovite), and mineral salts (sylvite). Potassium also has an isotope (about 1%) that is radioactive, decaying to argon, thus, it is commonly used to date igneous rocks.
