Glutamate may be converted to pyruvate , or may transfer its amino group to another ketoacid acceptor (oxaloacetate). The enzyme was formerly called serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) after the products formed by the reaction in its determination. ALT (Alanine amino transferase) is considered a liver enzyme and is tested to determine if liver function is normal or not.
