I feel that I could make a difference and would like to but don't have the financial backing. I don't think that the common man has the chance. Any suggestions?

Don't let the neysayers turn you away from politics. The common man does stand a chance in politics and here are a few ways to get your foot in the door:

1. Become involved in your community.... Know the district in which you live (state senate district, state house, county commission, city council) and become socially and politically active within that district. Often there are seats on political party committies in your community which require no more than being active to be elected to. It may mean an overly active social/political calendar but the people attending these events vote in primarys (primary turn-out is generally low and with some time and energy you can secure a place on the ballot with little if any money).

2. Volunteer at the local pary HQ. It's best if you can volunteer at the State Party HQ. Often you'll do little more than answer phones to start with, but having been there before, trust me, you will learn about the politics of the state, individual districts, and since you're answering the phones you will be "the voice of the party" (i.e. people will eventually learn your name). Yes, the work is tedious and time consuming but once you know the system, players, districts, and practices either the party or an ambitious candidate will give you a chance to show you're a valueable political commodity.

3. This goes in hand with options one and two but volunteer to work at State Party parties! They will only accept you if they know who you are ahead of time (yes, that means working at the HQ or attending events and meeting staff), but you will work $100 a plate events and meet the political leaders of the state.

4. All of this will lead to one of two places. If you have ambition you will see the opportunities for advancement and rise in political spheres. If you simply go through the motions you'll be the best damned envelope stamper the party ever saw! In the end, without money, it's hard work that WILL see you through to success! Good luck and I hope this helps!

The common man cannot run for office in this country... the land of the free.. etc etc. You have to be a millionaire or have the backing of one.. or you could always sell your soul to big business... Sorry, for you and I and the little guy.. no hope for political office. Funny how it is taught in school and every now and then you will hear some politician say that America is a land where a farm boy could become president. yeah, well that farm boy has to own his farm and about a dozen others and be a wealthy landowner... time has long passed that the " common" person could make a difference. And it is sad!

Just lie your A** off to whoever you want money and votes from. That's how it's done. The "common man", as in honest center of the road, doesn't stand a chance, and if this person were somehow to start to look promising, the high power schmucks would burn him/her with what ever dirt, fictional or not, if they even started to feel threatened. Sorry, but our system mostly runs on well greased special interest money.

Do anything you can to get in the media locally so people know your name. Write a letter to the editor that would want them to interview you. Call in a radio talk show repeatedly. Call a news station. Email a news station with a brilliant plan to win world peace. Just get in the media. Before you do this, make sure you know what your convictions are and do not deviate from them.

Another plan is to volunteer for your local political party. Get to know your congressman or senator on a personal Laval. When you volunteer you will often have a chance to talk to them on a one to one basis. Learn from them. Study how they handle the media and their jobs. The key to political success is the media.

Go find the rules in your party or the Board of Elections. You need to get thousands of names on a petition to get started.

Start from the bottom and work your way up. Local government, state government, then federal government.

If you are good, you'll attract supporters, including the people with the finances.
